New Technologies And The Support And Accessibility Of Cultural Heritage
Virginio Cantoni

Abstract: My talk focuses on the innovative use of interactive digital technologies in humanities practices. In recent years, at CVML we have experimented with different approaches in the field of promotion and conservation of cultural heritage. In 2015, for the exhibition “1525-2015. Pavia, the Battle, the Future. Nothing was like before”, we applied multimodal interaction methods. Visitors were able to observe and examine seven ancient tapestries through 3D reconstructions, virtual simulations, eye interaction, and gestural navigation. Furthermore, a transposition of the tapestries into tactile imagery allowed for exploration by the visually impaired and blind. In 2018 a more ambitious project was undertaken, the 3D reconstruction of Pavia in the Renaissance for the promotion of the history of the city and its architectural richness through videos offering virtual tours of the mid-16th century city. In 2019, we proposed an international competition, "Digital Anastylosis of Frescoes challenge (DAFNE)", to provide virtual solutions that add to the fresco restorer's toolkit, with the digital anastylosis of "puzzles" formed by frescoes fragments, mixed with spurious elements. Finally, this year on the 1300th anniversary of the transfer to Pavia of the body of Saint Augustine, a 3D multimedia presentation of the Ark allows a complete view of the artifact which unfortunately in the last arrangement it's really compromised.

Increasing the interst of high school students to scientific and engineering professions
Jordan Kolev

Abstract: In most countries in transition (East European countries) for the past 30+ years, we have observed a change of preferences of young people from scientific and engineering university programs to programs in the fields of law, finance, economics, PR etc. Now we can see that this process went too far, and we feel a deficiency in well qualified engineers and researchers. A similar process has taken place in developed countries for many years as well. In many cases, the applied solution is to import scientists and engineers from abroad, which contributes to the rise of the “brain drain” phenomenon. Meanwhile, there are a lot of “soft” measures which can be undertaken in order to equalize the situation. The scienъe and engineering professions have many advantages and could be attractive to young people. We should discover their specifics and show the youth the challenges, benefits and the beauty of of these professions. Based on own experience and the investigation of the international practice, the author presents a number of such soft measures which can be applied.
