Keynote on: Data Modeling in the NoSQL World
Abstract: NoSQL systems have gained their popularity for many reasons, including the
flexibility they provide in organizing data, as they relax the rigidity provided by
the relational model and by the other structured models. This flexibility and
the heterogeneity that has emerged in the area have led to a little use of tradi-
tional modeling techniques, as opposed to what has happened with databases
for decades.
We argue how traditional notions related to data modeling can
be useful in this context as well, for two main reasons. First, given that there
are some principles that apply to most NoSQL systems despite the significant
heterogeneity, data models provide a basis to the definition of generic approaches
to logical and physical design. Second, as the variety of systems and models
can create difficulties in developers and in their organizations, they leverage the
search for standardization and uniform access.
Biography:
Paolo Atzeni is Database Professor and Head of the Department of Engineering at Universita Roma Tre. He received his Dr. Ing. degree in Electrical Engineering from Universita di Roma "La Sapienza" in 1980. Before joining Universita Roma Tre, he was with IASI-CNR in Rome, then a faculty member at Universita di Napoli and later a professor at Universita di Roma La Sapienza. He also had visiting appointments at the University of Toronto, at Universita dell'Aquila and at Microsoft Research.
He has worked on various topics in the database field, including relational database theory, conceptual models and design tools, deductive databases, databases and the Web, model management, cooperation of database systems. He is the founder of the database group at Roma Tre, which includes five faculty members and various postdocs and students. They collaborate with various groups in Italy and abroad, on topics that include data models, data warehouses, data in the Web world.
He was trustee and the vice-president of the VLDB Endowment and he is currently a member of the Executive Board of the EDBT Association, of which he is also past President. He is WebDB founder.

Keynote on: Secure operations on encrypted data for the cloud
Abstract: Securing data for the cloud is a major problem of study in cryptography and security. After reviewing basic cryptographic techniques for securing data for the cloud, we will discuss main open problems on how to efficiently operate on the encrypted data, going one step further from encryption. One of the basic operations we will look at is encrypted search in such a way that the cloud sees no information about the search query or the returned result. The goal of the talk will be to review basic cryptographic techniques for achieving secure search on encrypted data. Finally, we will discuss various applications in the healthcare industry as well as in other industries where sensitive data needs to be searched securely.
Biography:
Dimitar Jetchev is a Swiss National Science Foundation Professor in number theory, arithmetic algebraic geometry and mathematical cryptology at SMA, EPFL. I completed my PhD in number theory and arithmetic geometry at the University of California, Berkeley in 2008 under the supervision of Prof. Ken Ribet. I was then a post-doc at IHES, Bures-sur-Yvette as well as the Laboratory for Cryptologic Algorithms, LACAL at EPFL.
